The view of Pictured Rocks on Lake Superior is best from a boat, but the tour boats were all turning back due to high winds and big waves.  We drove to Miners Castle at the top of the cliff to take this picture.

Note the cliffs going directly into the water.  With big waves, you'd never be able to get ashore.

The Fish Basket was a great place for lunch.  Basically, just a food truck, but fresh fish from this morning's catch.

Lots of signs warning that kayaking on very cold Lake Michigan is dangerous:
  • Sea kayaks only, not recreational kayaks
  • Waves can suddenly be 2-10 feet tall
  • No place to land or rest where cliff hits water
  • Waves crash into cliff
  • Could be miles from nearest beach
  • Cold water will kill you in an hour, even if 1st involuntary gasp doesn't drown you and cold shock doesn't give you a heart attack.
  • Needed: Wet or dry suit, spray skirt, bilge pump, marine radio
  • Boat can blow away from you if you fall out
  • Know how to re-enter the kayak
  • Don't go alone
  • Nearest rescue boat may be an hour or more away, even in good weather
