    If you have an X application that assumes the existence of an interactive user, but doesn't really require any input from the user, you can run it in a batch mode, on a "headless" file server for example, by directing its DISPLAY to the Virtual Frame Buffer (xvfm) included with the standard X distribution.  This null graphics server responds correctly to the client application, but doesn't actually display anything.  If your application still has problems, try running a well-behaved X application (like xlogo, or xclock) first.  This may "prime the pump" for you.
